Who are we?

Sanlam Specialised Finance (SanFin) is responsible for creation of shared value for Sanlam, its shareholders, policy holders, and societies with in which it operates by managing financial risk, developing financial products, and balance sheet optimisation, pursuing investments and financing opportunities in assets, sectors, markets, organisations, and geographies that enable maximum return within acceptable risk parameters.

What will you do?

Assist in the development of risk analysis, implementation and ongoing monitoring of new financial products and solutions structured across the Sanlam Group balance sheet, with a specific focus on all aspects of risk management.

Support and enable the business to deliver on its objectives (within the appropriate risk parameters), which include:
Asset liability management;
Product and solutions development and;
Balance sheet optimisation. What will make you successful in this role?

Assist, from a risk management perspective, the development of new products and financial solutions that span across the Sanlam Group balance sheet.

Ensure compliance with Sanlam Group Risk policies and frameworks in respect of new products developed.
Review new products, complex and bespoke transactions, and balance sheet optimisation solutions:
facilitate and support new transaction approval governance process
critically evaluate the product / complex transaction / solution and the appropriateness of existing risk metrics;
provide insights on proposed risk management strategies;

co-create required solutions (including trade bookings etc.) that impact risk monitoring to ensure the successful implementation of transactions whilst adhering to the Group risk appetite and standards.

Provide management with meaningful insights and recommendations in respect of risk management activities (including new products, and existing positions where required).

In the broader risk team, assist to proactively identify emerging risks through a fundamental understanding of the environment, objectives and risks associated with the business and its ALM activities.

Drive and support a culture of partnership, collaboration, accountability and transparency through meaningful engagement and interaction across the business.

Where needed, co-develop fit for purpose risk metrics and / or tools for the monitoring of risks not catered for in the existing risk environment with the objective of enabling the business or improving the risk management.

Qualification, Knowledge and Experience
Minimum Qualification - Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Investment Management or similar qualification.
Preferred Qualification - CA(SA), CFA or other similar postgraduate degree, Mathematics of Finance, Investment Management or other similar qualification.
Advantageous Qualification - qualification in SA taxation, Company Law, Banking and Insurance laws and regulations
At least 10+ years of experience in Risk Management in a banking or insurance (advantageous) environment with:
In-depth understanding of a Life company and life insurance industry in general;

In-depth understanding of all facets of financial and other risks inherent in this part of the market (this includes market risk, liquidity risk, credit exposure risk and operational risk).

Experience / exposure to cross-legal entity transactions and the management thereof (for example, transactions between a stock-broker and an associated entity).

Experience with secured lending activities including, repurchase agreements, securities lending and asset-backed financing transaction.
Working knowledge of accounting, financials and reporting standards.
Working knowledge of tax, legal and insurance regulatory considerations.
In depth understanding of banking and insurance environment and regulation.
Good communicator, written and verbal. Must have an ability to relay complex issues or improve understanding of key issues.
Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail.
