Job Purpose

  • Drive national sustainable, profitable growth of the product portfolios with appropriate strategic direction, brand stewardship and commercial acumen via direct business to business customer needs and shopper insights, across all channels. Coach, Lead, Direct, Motivate and inspire a team of trade and brand marketers based on their specific product and channel needs and requirements to achieve objectives. Responsible for the development and execution of the strategic and tactical trade and brand plans within the OTC division for key focus brands as well as established brands, by increasing share of voice, routes to market, maximize commercial trade and marketing opportunities to ensure the required return on investment and attaining financial objectives of the profit and loss

Key Job Outputs

Financial Objectives:


  • Achieve annual fiscal revenue targets for each channel via trade marketing efforts
  • Manage OPEX (cost centres, profit centres, advertising Traditional Trade (TT), allocated advertising and promotional (A&P)) for the portfolio
  • Align with Commercial on setting Brand and Channel objectives
  • Approval of marketing and channel spend according to commercial objectives.

Operational Excellence overseeing channel team to deliver and achieve the following:

  • Ensure that appropriate time is allocated in field with sales managers and reps to understand customer insights
  • Assisting Channel with trade decks for KAM and RSM from a marketing perspective
  • Understand and analysing category insights and providing recommendations and opportunities to the commercial teams
  • Promotion Mix and Strategy (aligning channel needs to brand plan)
  • Promotional and marketing agencies management
  • Oversee Channel strategy execution and customer conference preparations
  • Approval of regulatory compliance approval submissions
  • Assist channel with preparations of Department of Health (DOH) submissions relating to new launches and product changes.

Operational Excellence in managing marketing to deliver and achieve the following:

  • Brand and Trade Budget Management
  • To provide ongoing support and development of marketing
  • Sense of urgency in resolution of customer queries
  • Quality assessments of portfolio/ brand strategy and tactical implementation through infield visits to obtain required intelligence and insights
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams, including sales, product development, and regulatory affairs, to ensure alignment and maximize marketing effectiveness
  • Bridges gaps between sales and marketing (brand and trade)
  • New Product Development (NPD) Launch and Relaunch into trade ensuring the correct market share uptake at a store level, collaborating and guiding Channel Operations, Sales managers and Sales representatives
  • Providing Demand Forecasting insights based on market dynamics
  • Liaising with Creative agencies to develop above and below the line marketing material
  • Use extensive knowledge to actively manage and grow digital footprint.

  • Succession planning ensure succession plan for all key strategic roles
  • Competency Development develop key competencies and capabilities across the marketing personnel to drive the right behaviour and business objectives/ outcomes.

  • Ensure all purchases transacted are compliant with company policies and procedures and procurement requirements, including the SA Code of Marketing
    Inherent Requirements

Required Learning

  • Tertiary Qualification: Business / Marketing
  • 10+ years pharmaceutical OTC and Consumer FMCG and / or Marketing industry experience
  • Proven experience as a Marketing Manager in the pharmaceutical industry, with a track record of successful marketing campaigns and business growth
  • Demonstrated strategy implementation across Trade and Marketing functions
  • Strong analytical and business acumen skills, with the ability to interpret market research data and translate it into actionable marketing strategies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools and platforms, including social media, Search
  • Engine Optimisation (SEO), and analytics
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities, with a focus on fostering a collaborative and resultsdriven work environment
  • Highly organized and detailoriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
