Main purpose of the job:

To conduct accurate, high quality molecular testing and reporting of results for a variety of viral pathogens including SARS-CoV-2.


Location:


  • NICD Sandringham

Key performance areas:


  • Conduct molecular testing (RT-PCR, RTqPCR, dPCR) to detect SARS-CoV2 and/or other pathogens in wastewater according to defined SOPs and enter results onto the dashboard.
  • Use ampliconbased sequencing to amplify the entire genome of SARS-CoV2 and/or other pathogens from wastewater.
  • To develop appropriate tests and improve existing laboratory tests in order to optimize and enhance the provision of surveillance services.
  • To assist in troubleshooting of tests in order to solve problems timeously and to avoid unnecessary delays in generation of results.
  • To perform total quality management of the research laboratory to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • To maintain adequate stock of reagents and consumables and to assist with procurement processes so as to avoid delays in conducting of tests.
  • To write and submit abstracts for conferences, to write manuscripts for submission to national and international peerreviewed academic journals.
  • Work with wastewater team members, CVI colleagues, NICD staff in a collaborative manner that promotes sharing of knowledge and harmonious working environment.
  • To contribute to the formal teaching and assessment of students (NHLS and University) to ensure that their knowledge and understanding of the relevant discipline meets academic/degree requirements.
  • To train students, registrars and technical staff in laboratory skills to ensure that they can deliver improved and effective surveillance services.

Professional body registration:


  • HPCSA / SACNASP (NIOH), SAIOH (NIOH)

Required minimum education and training:

_MSc or equivalent in Medical Science or other relevant field._

_Required minimum work experience:

_Minimum 3 years experience as a Scientist_

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Experience in troubleshooting PCR reactions and validation of new tests.
  • At least one firstauthored journal manuscript in a peerreviewed journal and any number of coauthored publications.
  • Experience in bioinformatics would be advantageous.
  • Teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • BSc, and BSc (Hons).
