The Mastercard Foundation in partnership with the University of the Western Cape aims to develop Africa's next generation of leaders.

The Scholars Program, to be implemented over a period of seven years, provides financial, social and academic support to a diverse range of talented undergraduate and postgraduate students who are impeded by financial and social barriers, especially women, from South Africa and other parts of the African continent.

Through the Scholars Program, UWC will strengthen its role in producing transformative leaders.


Reporting to the Rector & Vice Chancellor, the successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • The overall implementation of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UWC.
  • Setting the annual goals of the Project Management Office and associated indicators of success in consultation with the Project Team.
  • Engaging all internal stakeholders within the academic, administrative and support sectors to integrate the Scholars Program at UWC within the core academic enterprise of the university to ensure optimal success of the Program;
  • Overseeing the preparation and timely submission of all reports on the Scholars Program at UWC requested by the Foundation, as well as to the UWC Steering Committee (SC) of the Scholars Program, in consultation with relevant UWC stakeholders.
  • Exploring new partnerships with high schools, recruitment partners and NGOs that work with highachieving, financially challenged students who face barriers to accessing higher education.
  • Participating as a member of the Scholars Program selection committee to ensure scholars are selected in a transparent manner in accordance with i) the UWC admission policies and criteria and ii) the terms of the contractual agreement reached between UWC and the Foundation;
  • Serving as the liaison person between UWC and potential scholars and recruitment partners in resolving issues that may arise.
  • Managing the overall budget of the Scholars Program at UWC on a daytoday basis in consultation with the UWC Project Team;
  • Exploring and establishing, if deemed appropriate, new recruitment, implementing, collaborating and universitytouniversity partnerships for the Scholars Program at UWC
  • Onboarding and Orientation and overseeing the Branding and Marketing of the Scholars Program

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:


  • A minimum of 8 years' relevant experience working at Senior Management level
  • Experience in managing funding /budgets.
  • Experience in managing stakeholder relations
  • Experience in high level project management.

Added Advantage:


  • Working experience in the Higher Education sector.

Required competencies (skills, knowledge, and behavioural attributes):

  • Understanding of university recruitment, admission and enrolment policies and processes.
  • Strong understanding of undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs and the translation from the former to the latter.
  • Strong knowledge of financial management with the relevant skills and competencies;
  • A global understanding of higher education systems and their relationships to national science and innovation spaces.
  • Experience in grant coordination, financial management, implementation monitoring and reporting.
  • Research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent planning and execution skills.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
