Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII)


In delivering 'social science that makes a difference' in South Africa and the region, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria.

Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.


The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) at the HSRC undertakes statistical surveys and research to monitor indicators for science, technology and innovation in South Africa, Research and Development (R&D), human resources in science and technology and related human mobility data.

CeSTII's two flagship surveys, the National Research and Experimental Development (R&D) Survey and the South African Innovation Survey, provide important data for analytical studies and the production of national science and technology (S&T) indicators on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

CeSTII provides an exciting environment for growth in terms of research on development of indicators, statistical analysis and innovation policy research as well as international engagements in these areas.


RESEARCH ASSISTANT (3 Positions)
**Short-term

  • 5month contract**
    Ref: CeSTII RA 11/2023

Minimum Requirements:


  • A minimum of a National Diploma or equivalent experience;
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, Excel, Knowledge of MS Access will be advantageous;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, and one other national language;
  • Proven survey research and fieldwork experience;
  • Skilled in telephone interviewing;
  • Good negotiation skills;
  • Attention to detail skills
  • Intellectual and personal integrity, a welldeveloped work ethic, and drive;
  • A strong service orientation and ability to prioritise;
  • Willingness to learn;
  • A capacity to work under pressure and to work after hours, when needed;
  • Good teamwork skills together with selfmotivation and ability to work independently;
  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently and have excellent time management skills;
  • Willingness to travel.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Dispatch and followup of Survey Questionnaires;
  • Telephone and online based fieldwork on large national surveys;
  • Data capture and accurate data management using online systems.
