    Overview

    We are seeking a highly skilled Linux engineer to design and implement detailed solutions for our compute and storage platform infrastructure. The successful candidate will ensure that our systems meet performance, availability, and resiliency requirements, providing 3rd level escalation support as needed.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Contribute to departmental business plans and budgets to secure resources for project delivery aligned with business unit and JSE strategy.
    • Collaborate with engineers to design reusable solutions that reduce total cost of ownership.
    • Ensure project objectives meet 'fit for purpose' criteria to manage financial expenditure while mitigating potential risks.
    • Manage capital expenditure on a project-by-project basis to ensure accurate budget allocations.
    • Identify system optimisations and improvements in current Linux compute and storage infrastructure to ensure high performance and availability.
    • Perform trade-off analysis of alternative technologies to recommend solutions that fit enterprise architecture and business drivers.

    Stakeholder Relationship Management:

    • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with software and hardware vendors to deliver value to internal stakeholders.
    • Build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure design solutions meet application needs.
    • Cultivate global networks of thought leaders through social media, conferences, and training interventions.
    • Leverage vendor relationships for knowledge sharing and professional development.

    Process Management:

    • Deliver against the strategic architectural roadmap by planning and managing business projects according to set protocols and SLAs.
    • Monitor risks to the business by reviewing solution design resiliency and ensuring monitoring measures are included.
    • Provide 3rd level escalation BAU support to resolve complex problems and offer routine BAU support.
    • Create functional requirement documents for technology solutions that meet business requirements.
    • Apply architecture principles and technology standards consistently across Linux infrastructure platforms.
    • Ensure all solution designs have supporting documentation, including implementation guidelines and operational readiness plans.
    • Take accountability for updating Technology Reference Models (TRM) and capturing changes to in-production designs.
    • Conduct market research to inform recommendations on compute products, services, and standards.
    • Perform compute analysis to ensure solution design meets business requirements.
    • Troubleshoot system inefficiencies and collaborate with subject matter experts on critical IT projects.
    • Lead infrastructure projects to design and engineer large-scale implementations.
    • Analyse existing compute structures to define simplified, modern compute architectures.
    • Ensure disaster recovery, BCP, and security measures are considered in solution design processes.
    • Maintain compute artefacts in the Enterprise Architecture Tool.

    Skill Development and Innovation:

    • Improve personal capability and professional growth by discussing development needs and proposed solutions with management.
    • Remain current on emerging technologies through professional groups, training, and independent research.
    • Upskill team members by sharing knowledge and research results to minimise dependencies.
    • Apply thought leadership in using Linux compute platforms to increase technical knowledge and adhere to industry best practices.
    • Live the JSE values, demonstrating professional conduct and adherence to required technical standards.

    Transformation and Innovation Contribution:

    • Develop and implement improvement ideas and innovative solutions contributing to divisional and JSE results.
    • Hold an Honours degree in Computer Science and be a Certified Linux Engineer.
