The role in a nutshell:


You will form part of the
Anti-Financial Crime Anti-Money Laundering Operations team based in South Africa, and you will report to the AML Operations Manager.

Our AML Operations team looks after our global business and consists of a growing team of enthusiastic, energetic Lunauts.

You will work in a fast paced environment, collaborating with other business units, including Engineering, Product and Legal teams, servicing the business on an international level together with the teams from Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the United States.

The AML Operations team takes care of the operational aspects of financial crime risk identification matters for Luno's global business.

Our mission is to create a world class compliance experience for Luno as well as our customers.

We make sure we have the processes and information available that enable us to truly understand our customer risk, we monitor for any external red flags customers may raise when they use Luno and we deal with any questions our business or customers may have on what good looks like.

We operate in regional teams around the world with our central team in South Africa.


Your mission will involve:


  • Management and oversight of the Screening Team on all functional and people management aspects;
  • Managing all aspects of customer screening and the outcome thereof in respect of:
  • sanctions, adverse media and political exposure;
- private watch lists;
- geolocation and geofencing; and
- any other AML risk identifiers and typologies as appropriate;

  • Management, fine tuning and reporting on screening rules, thresholds and outcomes;
  • Coordination and management of senior management approvals;
  • Oversight over the drafting and, where appropriate, filing of regulatory reports and responding to regulatory requests;
  • Drafting and implementing standard operating procedures and guidance to ensure compliance with regulations;
  • Assisting in the implementation of new regulations or changes to existing regulations;
  • Establishing processes for, review of and managing of quality assurance;
  • Creating, implementing and managing role based training;
  • Governance and reporting in respect of team performance, progress tracking, service level agreements, key risk indicators and operational metrics;
  • Supporting the AML Operations Manager in the planning and oversight of day to day team tasks;
  • Working with the Compliance Advisory team to ensure that our operations are regulatory compliant;
  • Collaborating with the wider Anti-Financial Crime team to support ongoing investigations, queries and analytics;
  • External stakeholder management in conjunction with the AML Operations Manager and Head of Anti-Financial Crime Operations;
  • Supporting external and internal compliance audits;
  • Supporting Luno's compliance efforts across multiple geographies; and
  • Supporting the business with AML operations related queries, including triaging received queries and resolution of questions pertaining to Luno's compliance procedures.
  • University degree from a recognised tertiary institution
  • A
    minimum of 5 years work experience in an Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Terrorist Financing related field
  • Strong analytical mindset
  • Ability to adapt within a fastpaced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and experience in process writing and documenting outcomes of reviews and investigations
  • If not

    an existing, valid permit to work in South Africa**:
  • Entrepreneurial, strong sense of responsibility and very high level of integrity
  • Solid interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Friendly, transparent, articulate and driven to succeed
  • Familiarity with cryptocurrencies will be
    highly advantageous
