    Job Title: Laboratory Assistant

    Main Purpose of the Job

    Perform routine analytical techniques related to established Sample Preparation and Fire Assay procedures.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    • Receive samples with a security guard, verify seal numbers on trunks against Way Bill information, and sign the waybill.
    • Sort and box samples upon receipt.
    • Collect samples from Sample Receiving for weighing.
    • Perform sample preparation tasks as per client instructions, including weighing, drying, and crushing.
    • Split, pulverize, and box samples in Sample Prep while conducting screen checks.
    • Screen samples for PSA.
    • Discard samples as necessary.
    • Conduct fire assay processes including weighing, fluxing, fusion, and cupelling.
    • Discard samples for return to clients.
    • Maintain punctuality at all times.
    • Ensure timely completion of customer requirements, reporting daily production figures to shift/team leaders and providing explanations for missed targets and equipment/consumable status.
    • Follow clear instructions from immediate superiors and demonstrate flexibility in executing duties.
    • Maintain clean work areas and surrounding environments through regular housekeeping.
    • Comply with the company's QHSE policy.
    • Understand SLIMS basics.
    • Adhere to ISO 17025 and SANAS quality management standards.
    • Assist in maintaining laboratory instruments and apparatus.
    • Be willing to work overtime when necessary.
    • Operate in various departments, including sample preparation and Fire Assay (rotation).
    • Meet all quality and safety requirements set by the SGS management system.
    • Complete other reasonable tasks assigned by direct line managers.

    Specific Authorities

    • Initiate formal improvement requests for system deviations or identified improvements.
    • Report faulty apparatus/equipment to immediate superiors.
    • Cease using equipment constituting a safety hazard or affecting test results integrity.
    • Refuse work posing an imminent environmental risk and report such situations.
    • Stop using hazardous equipment without proper knowledge/protection and report incidents.
    • Avoid work affecting service quality/integrity and report issues to higher authority.

    Qualifications

    • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science.

    Experience

    • Minimum 3 years of experience in a laboratory environment.
    • Previous knowledge of measurement, preparation, fluxing, and fusing of samples is advantageous.

    Competencies

    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to read and write.
    • Flexibility.
    • Full knowledge of Sample Preparation and Fire Assay procedures.
    • Basic understanding of entering data into LIMS.
    • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
