    CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

    The Director will provide overall direction and management of SAIMI's internal operations, ensuring the smooth operation of the Institute and delivery in key result areas to facilitate SAIMI's strategic positioning in the maritime sector.

    This includes administrative management of the Institute's governance, human resources, and financial matters. The Director will also provide the operational interface for SAIMI with Nelson Mandela University and other strategic partners, while providing high-level strategic support to the CEO towards achieving SAIMI's key objectives.

    Key Performance Areas:

    • Strategic Operational Support to the CEO:
      • Support the CEO in providing strategic direction for SAIMI in respect of operations, underpinned by achievable operational plans.
      • Develop operational performance plans aligned to SAIMI strategic goals.
      • Develop, implement, and review operational policies and guidelines for the Institute.
      • Represent SAIMI and present at events, conferences, and/or on Boards, committees etc.
    • Overall Management of SAIMI Operations:
      • Operational planning and management of resources (human, financial, physical, IT, etc) needed for SAIMI to operate effectively and deliver on its strategic goals.
      • Ensure that Mandela University policies and procedures are adhered to in respect of staff appointments, procurement, contracting service providers, awarding and/or receipt of funding.
      • Evaluate the efficiency of business procedures and overall performance according to organisational objectives and apply improvements.
      • Oversight of financial processes and projects to promote financial sustainability.
      • Collaboration with Innovation Office to manage the IP and commercialization activities of SAIMI.
      • Overseeing the development of funding proposals, conclusion and implementation of partnership agreements.
      • Leading budgeting and related reporting processes in line with funding requirements.
      • Contribution to the development of organizational reports.
    • Risk and Compliance:
      • Ensuring SAIMI compliance with stakeholder contractual obligations.
      • Adherence to SAIMI governance framework and policies.
      • Compliance with relevant regulations and policies.
      • Development and provision of necessary support and resources to ensure the execution of the Risk Management Plan.
      • Tracking progress of risk management efforts by reviewing the Risk Register and/or risk management reports.
      • Monitoring and managing the compliance framework and associated risks.
      • Providing guidance on escalated risk events and assistance with resolution.
      • Establishing mitigation approaches for identified high severity risks.
    • Stakeholder Engagement:
      • Management of the development of new or additional partnerships, alliances, and network with key stakeholders.
      • Support in developing and managing the stakeholder engagement plan.
      • Exploration of linkages and synergies with other SAIMI programmes and projects for increased impact.
      • Contribution to strategic reviews and development of SAIMI's programmes in general to ensure alignment.
