    Introduction

    Mintek is seeking a highly skilled POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW to join the Pyrometallurgy Division (PMD). The successful candidate will be responsible for executing pyrometallurgy research and technology development tasks, including computational multiphysics and reduced order modelling in problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop and apply advanced computational multiphysics and reduced order modelling techniques to solve complex pyrometallurgy-related problems.
    • Utilise open-source computational multiphysics modelling tools such as OpenFOAM.
    • Design and implement software solutions using programming languages like C and Python.
    • Cultivate a strong understanding of pyrometallurgy fundamentals and its applications.
    • Conduct high-impact research and deliver innovative solutions in fields relevant to pyrometallurgy.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Stay updated on the South African and global metals, minerals, and energy industries.
    • Familiarity with pyrometallurgical process software and design tools such as PyroSim, FactSage, or similar is an advantage.
    • Experience with CAD tools like Fusion 360 or FreeCAD is beneficial.
    • Knowledge of SHEQ systems and technology transfer, commercialisation, and product development principles is desirable.
    • Able to attract investment or R&D funding is highly advantageous.

    Requirements:

    • PhD in Metallurgical/Chemical/Mechanical/Process Engineering or equivalent, with a strong emphasis on modelling skills relevant to pyrometallurgy research and technology development.
    • At least one year of postdoctoral research experience, preferably in computational multiphysics and reduced order modelling.
    • Familiarity with high-performance computing and shared/remote computational resources is beneficial.
    • Professional recognition and registration are an added advantage.
    • Experience in postgraduate supervision is also advantageous.

    Desirable Skills:

    • Team player with a passion for planning and conducting new and innovative projects.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a demanding environment.
    • Willingness to travel locally and internationally and work shifts in hot and dusty plant environments when required.
    • Able to independently engage with industry leaders, operators, and high-level international partners.
    Negotiable salary: R400,000 - R600,000 per annum.
