Main purpose of the job:


  • To research the prevention of obesity among adolescents through understanding the food environment and the policies needed to support their health

  • Johannesburg

Key performance areas:


  • Conduct research in the field of NCD prevention in adolescent and child health focusing on the food environment, specifically ultraprocessed foods and childdirected marketing
  • Undertake literature reviews in the relevant fields
  • Use qualitative research methodologies, including planning, sampling, data gathering, analysis, and writing up of the results
  • Use quantitative research methods, including planning, sampling, questionnaire design, data gathering, analysis, and writing up of results
  • Participate in the writing of proposals for new research projects
  • Write policy briefs
  • Support advocacy groups by providing evidence for policies
  • Engage with community organizations and individuals about the research

Required minimum education and training:

-
Master's Degree in Public Health or equivalent

Required minimum work experience:

-
3+ years' experience in Health Research:

-
Must have been published in academic peer-reviewed publications

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:


  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing research
  • Interest and or experience in Health Promotion
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Expertise in data collection, and analysis, including the use of appropriate software
  • Selfmotivated and able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Assertive, critical thinker, confident, and adaptable
  • Good communicator
  • Liaise effectively with Ethics Committees, funders/donors, research networks, media, NGOs, the Department of Health, and other universities (local and international)/academic institutions
