Applications are invited for the Headship of the School of Oral Health Sciences, one of

seven Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg South Africa. The School of Oral Health Sciences comprises several
academic units, namely, Community Dentistry, General Dental Practice, Maxillo-Facial & Oral
Surgery, Oral Biological Sciences, Oral Medicine and Periodontology, Oral Pathology, Oral
Rehabilitation and Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry.

The Head of School (HOS) will have the overall responsibility for the academic leadership
and governance of undergraduate (BDS, BOHSc and the proposed B. Dental Therapy) and
postgraduate programs in the school. In addition, the School is in the process of building
its research excellence, which makes a considerable contribution to the clinical training of
undergraduates and postgraduates/registrars in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
In appointing the HOS, we seek an outstanding leader who will inspire, motivate and develop
staff, promoting a culture of high performance, engagement and commitment. The position
offers the potential for an energetic, committed (suitable) applicant to move the School into
a new era of relevance, effectiveness and focus in its teaching and research enterprise.
The position is suited to an accomplished clinician who is motivated to drive academic and
research excellence, innovation and sustainability.

Responsibilities:

The Head of School will be responsible for providing academic vision and leadership required
to enable the School to establish and maintain a position of excellence within the University
and in the wider educational context.

This will involve the management of all academic activities inclusive of teaching and research
at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, student related and administrative matters within
the School, including human resources, financial management and general administration.
The Head of School will be responsible for the development and promotion of academic
excellence within the school as well as drive the School's community outreach program

Qualifications and Experience:
BDS qualification, a specialist qualification preferably in Dentistry, as well as a PhD.
Qualifications should be registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Experience in university administration at a senior level is an essential recruitment.

The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and academic management
skills, should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the
respect of the members of the School, and must meet the academic requirements to be
appointed at least at Associate Professor level.
