Applications are invited for the above-indicated vacancy within Newzroom Afrika. The incumbent will report to the output editor.
Job purpose

The S ub editor is a key member of the Output Desk and is responsible for ensuring that stories are accurate, engaging and in line with Newzroom Afrika's Editorial Policy and Style Guide.

The Sub-Editor works under the leadership of the Editor on Duty, Output Editor and Managing Editor.
Key responsibilities

Subbing all on-air content - scripts, graphics, boards, crawlers, straps, etc
Ensure all content is factually accurate and adheres to the TV News style of writing
Ensure there's zero factual, grammatical and spelling errors
Generate ticker/straps/breaking news elements and ensure that the content is constantly updated
Write local and international stories when required
Assist in scripting headlines and promos
Help re-angle the stories regularly
Ensure that all copy adheres to Newzroom Afrika's Editorial Policy and Style Guide
Constantly communicate with Desk and Field Reporters to refine story angles and ensure accuracy
Liaise with reporters on story developments and updates
Play the role of a mentor to Desk and Field Reporters
Work closely with the Bulletin Editors to ensure seamless bulletins on air and check all content in the Rundowns
Contribute story ideas for the news programmes
Check wire services and news feeds for breaking news
Flag to Executive Producer/News Editor issues that may require the Channel to give right of reply
Skills and competencies

Five years or more experience as a sub-editor in a newsroom, preferably broadcast media
Three-year tertiary qualification in journalism or similar field
Excellent writing skills and ability to write for TV
Knowledge of newsroom production systems and workflows
Excellent knowledge of fact-checking processes
Excellent editorial judgement
Passion for news and current affairs
Thorough knowledge of South African and international news and current affairs
Good understanding of legal and ethical issues with regards to TV broadcasting
An understanding of the BCCSA Code of Conduct
Good grasp of English and other South African official languages
Good Interpersonal skills
Ability to work under extreme pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Ability to check and sub-content quickly, while ensuring accuracy
