This is a full-time, on-site Commercial Underwriting Manager role based in Johannesburg. The role is a hands-on with a small team of one or two people.
As the underwriter, you will play a vital role in managing underwriting including management of renewals, issuing new policies, maintaining client relationships and delivering excellent service.
Additionally, at some point, you will also be responsible for training and mentoring junior team members and graduates. This position requires a profound understanding of short-term insurance policies, analytical and negotiation skills.The manager will oversee the underwriting process, and assess, evaluate, and manage risks for commercial transactions. The role will also involve improving operational efficiencies and developing underwriting strategies for the business.
Responsibilities
Assist in managing a portfolio of personal and commercial clients.
Develop strong relationships with clients, understanding their requirements, and providing tailored solutions that align with their values.
Identify and develop efficient underwriting processes.
Negotiate policy terms and conditions with insurers to achieve favourable terms for our clients.
Ensure efficient policy administration, including issuing policies, endorsements, etc.
Address client inquiries, claims, and complaints promptly and professionally, and including claims team as needed.
Stay up-to-date on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes affecting short-term Islamic insurance.
Train and mentor junior team members, sharing your experience and guiding them to success.
Meet or exceed key performance indicators (KPIs)
Requirements
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, or a related field (preferred).
RE qualified.
Proven work experience of a minimum 5 years as a Short-Term Commercial Insurance Underwriter.
Strong knowledge of short-term insurance products, policies, and underwriting processes.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to build and maintain strong client relationships based on trust, integrity, and exceptional customer service within the framework of Islamic values.
Proficiency in using MS Office software and insurance systems.Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
Ability to multitask, prioritize work effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Comfortable to work in an Islamic Environment. Islamic knowledge is not mandatory.
