    Job Description:

    The Research Officer role involves managing datasets, producing technical reports, and collaborating with partner organisations. This position reports to the Manager: Research, Development and Monitoring.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Support research activities and contribute to designing interventions for organisational marine conservation objectives.
    • Ensure timely completion of baseline, ongoing monitoring, and impact research.
    • Establish and manage monitoring databases, retrieving information from various sources.
    • Engage with stakeholders and partners to understand their requirements and challenges related to waste.
    • Assist with project management of external service providers as necessary.
    • Coordinate the organisational volunteer database, ensuring volunteers are trained and available to support interventions.
    • Present research and project reports at meetings, workshops, and conferences to various stakeholder groups.
    • Establish collaboration with research partners, including universities, NGOs, and other partners.
    • Contribute to the NPO's peer-reviewed publication activity.
    • Produce technical reports and scientific manuscripts.
    • Support funding proposals and applications.
    • Maintain current internal M&E systems.
    • Analyse data and provide reporting to various stakeholders.
    • Support the Strategic Stakeholder Engagement impact portfolio with monthly news stories, social media content, and communications content.
    • Work collaboratively as an effective team member.

    Requirements:

    • A Masters' degree in an environmental science field.
    • At least five years' experience in an appropriate discipline.
    • A proven track record in project management.
    • Experience in research and writing, ideally writing reports and professional publications.
    • A proven track record in developing strategic plans.
    • Ability to work with and lead a team.
    • A valid driver's license.
    • South African citizenship with a clear criminal record.

    Behavioural Competencies:

    • A passion for sustainability.
    • Excellent organisational and proactive skills.
    • Knowledge of global developments on plastics, climate change, marine conservation, and education.
    • A basic understanding of stakeholder engagement strategies.
    • Excellence in public speaking and presenting research plans and results.

    Location: Port Elizabeth - full-time in-office position.
    Duration: 12-month fixed-term contract, with potential for renewal for an additional 3 years.
    Start date: As soon as possible.
    Salary: Market-related.
