Job Title: Blood Bank Technician/Blood Bank Technologist

Qualified professionals are sought to perform routine testing functions in blood banks, including compatibility, postnatal, and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform operational functions (manual and automated) according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and within required timeframes.
• Check blood and blood product stock levels, report expired units, and dispose of waste according to SOP.
• Receive reagents and proficiency tests, store them at correct temperatures, and prepare documentation for waste traceability.
• Collect and place medical waste containers in designated areas for removal and disposal by approved waste removal companies.
• Monitor equipment temperature, record information, and report problems to supervisors.

Additional Responsibilities for Blood Bank Technologists:

• Check and verify test results performed by registered technicians, trainee technicians, and student technologists.
• Assist supervisors with training and competency assessments.
• Perform secondary testing, including problem cross-matches, postnatal, antibody investigations, and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.
• Check equipment to ensure it is in working order, check blood and blood product stock levels, and maintain competency for standard operating procedures.
• Strive to remain well-informed of current developments to promote knowledge sharing and acquisition of required CPD points.

Requirements:

• HPCSA registration as a Biomedical Technician/Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
• Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Understanding of relevant legislation and company procedures.
• Occasional local and national travel.
