Our organization, a leading horticultural firm seeks to appoint a highly skilled and passionate individual to the post of Seedlings Grower to manage the procedures and activities of growing seedlings and ensure the delivery of high-quality products at all times
.

• Assist production supervisors with growing activities chemicals, feeding, spraying and sowing
  

• Manipulate growing in order to have plugs ready in full and on time.
• Ensure that the germination conditions in the germination rooms and germination areas in the greenhouses are in line with acceptable standards.
• Oversee the testing of batches of soil on pH and EC when required.
• Scout for daily diseases, insects and deficiencies and any other problems in the greenhouses and implement corrective actions where required.
• Ensure that the greenhouses and garden are in a neat and hygienic condition at all times.
• Ensure that optimal climate conditions for growing are set. Timelessly check that wet walls, heater and extractor fans, boilers, rollup sides etc are in a working condition.
• Watering, feeding, spraying, product manipulation and growing conditions.
• Responsible for trialling existing products in order to improve product quality and trialling new lines by setting up growing procedures and testing in open garden.
• Assess the need for trials plan, execute and report back on trials.
• Ensure that the rooting conditions in the rooting areas are in line with acceptable rooting procedures.

• Ensure adherence to the watering SOP and alignment with feeding and spraying programs.
• Ensure that the correct sowing, watering and treatment procedures are followed on the sowing line.
• Document the feeding and spraying programs and all other relevant information.

• Keeping up to date with research and developments in the field.
• Implementing aspects when required in order to ensure compliance with developments in the market/field.
• Finding new and efficient ways to do things.

• Training of staff on how to grow plants, imparting of knowledge
• Provide training to employees in order to ensure continual development of employees

• Ensure timeous delivery of good quality seedlings in time as per weekly schedule.
• Perform as back up for absent staff if and when needed.
• Working with production coordinators and team leaders to ensure production activities such as moving, gapping, transplanting, feeding, spraying are performed in time and that deadlines are met.
• Scout daily for diseases, insects and deficiencies and any other problems with crops in the greenhouses and alert of any other issues in greenhouses. Implement corrective actions where necessary in consultation with relevant people.
• Plan the gapping, transplanting and moving of trays with production coordinator and team leaders and allocating the necessary staff.
• Check, control and manipulate the growing environment to ensure best crop.

• Ensure workers within your team are performing their duties productively, efficiently & to quality within standard operating procedures.
• Responsible for the planning and prioritizing of the daily activities for your team.
• Supervise, task and assist team leaders and coordinators.
• Provide on job training and feedback for constant improvement and up to date developments within the field.

• B tech in Botany or Horticulture / BSc in Horticulture or BEng in Horticulture
• 5 years' experience as a seedlings grower (in ornamental area is preferred).
• Experience with Techniques and equipment for planting, growing and Harvesting plant products including storage/ handling techniques.
• Technical seedling production background.
