Who is the Jakes Gerwel Fellowship?

What will I do?


You will form part of the Graduate Teaching Fellowship programme team, reporting to the Head of the Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF).


  • Provide support and coaching to JGF's newly qualified teachers using an established JGF teaching observation tool.
  • Implement an NQT programme aimed at developing and supporting newly qualified teachers.
  • Conduct inperson school visits to observe and support JGF's newly qualified inservice teachers within the Gauteng region and Western Cape Region and likely in additional provinces.
  • Prepare and present quarterly reports while aiding the development of the competency framework for the NQT programme and the monitoring and evaluation team.

What do I need? / Competencies

  • Hold at least a 4year B.Ed. degree or PGCE.
  • Are registered or previously registered with SACE.
  • Have between years' experience in teaching in a South African school.
  • Have a strong understanding of South Africa's secondary & tertiary education system.
  • Have your own transport and a driver's license.
  • Are willing and able to work in the Gauteng area and likely visit additional provinces to conduct school visits. Travel is estimated at 60% of your time.
  • Carry a strong alignment to JGF's values and mission
  • South African citizen / permanent resident

  • High School teaching experience, with a coaching background as an added advantage.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the needs of newly qualified teachers.
  • The ability to explain, demonstrate, report and communicate well in written English.
  • Competency in speaking, reading and writing in English and preferably at least another official Southern African language.
  • A zeal for a blended working environment and computer literacy (or willingness to learn quickly).
  • A demonstrated interest in solving a particular challenge within the South African Education system.
