    Job Title: Blood Bank Technician/Technologist

    Position Summary

    A qualified and experienced Blood Bank Technician or Technologist is required to perform routine testing functions in blood banks, including compatibility, postnatal and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.


    Key Responsibilities

    Operational Objectives

    1. Perform all operational functions according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and within the required timeframes.
    2. Check blood and blood product stock levels and report expired units.
    3. Receive reagents and proficiency tests and store them at the correct temperature.
    4. Dispose of waste according to SOP.
    5. Prepare documentation for waste traceability.
    6. Collect medical waste containers daily for removal and disposal.

    Instrument and Laboratory Maintenance

    1. Perform daily cleaning of work areas and equipment according to SOP.
    2. Check that all equipment is in working order and report defects.
    3. Monitor the temperature of equipment used to store blood and blood products.

    Quality and Risk Objectives

    1. Ensure policies and SOPs are read and understood and maintain competency.
    2. Comply with standards of practice, accreditation and safety requirements.
    3. Contribute to continuous safety and quality improvement.

    Customer Relations

    1. Document customer complaints and forward to the Supervisor.
    2. Interact professionally with internal and external customers.

    Blood Bank Technologist Responsibilities

    Operational Objectives

    1. Deputise for Shift Supervisor when absent.
    2. Report situations where critical consumables are not available after hours.

    Specialist Technical Functions

    1. Check and verify test results performed by registered technicians.
    2. Assist BB Supervisor with training and competency assessments.

    Quality and Risk Objectives

    1. Check equipment to ensure it is in working order.
    2. Comply with standards of practice, accreditation and safety requirements.

    Education and Experience Requirements

    HPCSA Registered Biomedical Technician / Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
