About wesley matea:
I am an optimistic and systematic mining engineering graduate from the University of Pretoria. I recently switched careers from front line mining production shift supervisor, to project management. Currently I am busy with my Masters degree at the University of Pretoria where I am getting theoretical exposure to procurement and contract management, Project risk management, construction management, systems thinking and engineering management. I plan to specialize in front end loading phases of construction projects within mining and energy sector.
My early exposure to projects stems from a FULCO project I was involved in at Sasol mining during my 3 year graduate development program. I was involved in the planning and implementation of a new shift system project (FULCO) that the company rolled out in 2019. My responsibility was to assist the monitoring and controlling team in testing the effectiveness of the execution processes; as well as, improving and tailoring current operational processes to fit into the new shift system. We collected data from different stakeholders, which was analyzed to come up with improvement initiatives. These initiatives were tracked and continuously improved in an agile sense.
This Job required a systematic and assertive person; therefore, I have invested in upskilling myself with soft skills that enabled me to understand people. I enjoy the uniqueness and multi-disciplinary nature of projects; therefore, I plan to obtain my masters and PMP certificate with the goal of moving into the portfolio management space in the next 5 years.
Experience
My first 3 years at Sasol was in a graduate development program, where I worked with various departments within the underground coal mining value chain. During this time, I was involved in the planning and implementation of a new shift system project (FULCO) that the company rolled out in 2019. Furthermore, I worked as a shift supervisor (Shift Boss) where I was involved in driving underground safety and production standards at 2 mine sections. My role was to do underground inspections and fixing all deviations from standards. I was also managing the resources and material used by my team during their winning of the mineral.
Education
I graduated in 2018 with a bachelor of mining engineering degree and worked for Sasol mining for 4 years. My first 3 years at Sasol was in a graduate development program, where I worked with various departments within the underground coal mining value chain. Currently I am working towards my masters in Project management.
