About Thandiwe Nkwanyana:

I am a qualified teacher with 27 years, high school teaching experience, and 15 years in the management position, as the departmental head. I have also acted as a deputy principal, for a year. My experience has given me an opportunity to teach, interact and mentor newly appointed teachers as well student teachers. Mentoring university students has afforded me with an opportunity to understand different modules that are done in different universities. Therefore, I have opened private tutoring classes for Unisa and Mancosa Bed students. Students tutoring gave me an opportunity to the following skills and expertise: ability to privately teach students from tertiary level; ability to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge; ability to carry out research; ability to present and conduct seminars clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences through various media; use of technology to aid teaching and learning, presentation skill, interpersonal skills, organisation and administrative skill, analytical skills, reporting skills, professional skill, and accountability.  

Experience

ACTING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Leadership role

  • Monitored curriculum coverage of HODs. 
  • Designed year plan which was incorporated into the school calendar. 
  • Conducted and monitored internal assessment and external evaluation
  • Controlled compilation of schedules for promotion and progression purposes. 
  • Managed the effective use of Norms and Standards for schools funding as per departmental policies on finances.
  • Conducted needs analysis of the schools together with different phases in the school.   
  • Ensured proper planning and control of expenditure.
  • Prepared school finances for auditing purposes. 
  • Participated in the appraisal processes of HODs and educators through QMS. 
  • Rendered assistance to the SGB in the performance of their functions in terms of SASA of 1996. 
  • Served on recruitment and promotion committees for the processes of appointment of educators. 
  • Ensured that substantive vacant posts are filled as per relevant and applicable HRM circulars created as a result of attrition. 
  • Inducted newly appointed educators on curriculum, management, policies, teaching and assessment. 
  • Coordinated all statistical information as required by SASAMS. 
  • Play a leading role in the development of the school time table.
  • I assume duties in the absence of the Principal.
  • Take a leading role in yearly strategic meeting of the school where we set the goals and determine the needs of the school.
  • Monitor learner attendance through collecting class registers from class teachers, every Fridays.
  • Took a leading role in the development of the school’s vision and mission.
  • I have succeeded in creating the spirit of co-operation of employees by disseminating information to all stakeholders.
  • Improve educator’s competences, for an example,
    • Adjusting teaching strategies to meet knowledge requirement especially in mathematics and science.
    • Interpreting and adapting learning programmes to be relevant to learning context.
    • Critically evaluate different programme in reality through case studies and self-evaluation.
    • Constructing classroom atmosphere that is democratic but disciplined.

DEPARTMENTAL HEAD

Curriculum management

  • Monitor and formulator department policies
  • Assisting educators in the implementation of curriculum policies.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate educators work programmes and lesson plans.
  • Assist in developing school improvement plan.
  • Monitoring annual assessment programmes within the departments.
  • Analysing exams results of all the subjects in the maths and science department, and develop turnaround strategy for the underperforming subjects.
  • Assist educators with the implementation of CAPS.
  • Moderate educators mark lists, schedules and learners reports at the end of each term.

POST LEVEL-1 EDUCATOR

Experience in teaching and learning activities

  • I ensure quality progress of teaching and learning.
  • Organise teaching and learning material for the department.
  • Collaborate with educators from neighbouring school in organising extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Delegate some duties to educators.

Monitor progress, evaluate success and continually review strategies that will make mathematics and science department work co-operatively and effectively.
