About STEPHEN LEBETHE:
I am a Senior History teacher and Subject Head of the History Department at Alexander Sinton High School. I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I hold Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in English and History and a Higher Diploma in Education.
I am passionate about education and working with young people and seeing them grow. I have a dynamic and outgoing personality and I believe this makes the classroom experience a constructively energetic space for my students. Learning is a shared experience, so I strive to create a lively and cooperative learning space for my students. Equally important is the holistic development of the child and over the years I have seen how learners thrive outside of the classroom on the sports field or extra curricula codes on offer. I consequently am a keen participant in this field.
A strong team makes for strong departments and ultimately for strong schools. Being a team player is crucial to my educative practice. I have over 20 years experience at high school level and haver a wealth of experience to offer. The opportunity to practice in a new environment also presents an opportunity to learn and grow for my colleagues. I am excited at the opportunity to practice my craft in an exciting and new environment.
Experience
I am a Senior History teacher and Subject Head of the History Department at Alexander Sinton High School. I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I hold Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in English and History and a Higher Diploma in Education. In 2017 I obtained my Bed Honours degree in education.
I have over 20 years of teaching at High school level and have developed an in-depth knowledge of what it takes for learners to perform optimally. My teaching practice is based on developing critical thinking skills so that learners become independent and analytical thinkers. I strive to create a cooperative learning environment in my classrooms, as I believe that learning is a shared experience. This is particularly the case in my subject area History where I encourage debate and constructive interaction. Equally important, is that my learners need to enjoy the classroom experience and the learning process in my class.
I currently head the Department of History at my institution and I am responsible for ensuring the team plans and develops lessons, materials and assessments in line with the curriculum. I also ensure that we function as a homogenous unit and that I am an invaluable source of support and mentorship. As a Senior teacher in the district, I am a part of a team that mentors teachers at schools who faced challenges in reaching desired results in the National Grade 12 examinations. I also form part of the remedial teaching team offering Saturday and holiday classes to struggling schools. Finally, I am also a marker appointed by the Department of Education in the National Final examinations for History.
I am excited about education and helping young people grow and realise their full potential. The teaching profession is a noble one and a calling. It has always been a dream to be able to travel and practice this noble profession in dynamic and new contexts such as yours. I look forward to the opportunity to not only share my experience, but also to learn.
Education
I hold a BA degree with majors in History and English from the University of South Africa. I have a formal teaching qualification, a Higher Diploma in Education (HDE) from the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2017 I completed my Bed Honors in education from the North West University in South Africa.
