Currently working a Laboratory Specialist in packaging, this entails governing quality in all steps of the packaging environment with 6 direct reports. I have 4 years' experience managing a QMS. I have also worked in analytical chemistry lab, microbiology lab as well as packaging lab.

Looking after quality control operations for packaging and warehousing. This entails leading team of quality personnel managing quality in the production lines and managing compliance to quality policy, customer requirements as well as legislative requirement.

Highlight: Drastically reduced consumer complaints for site through effective CAPA and stakeholder engagement as well as improved quality culture across site.

Duties:

  • Quality Control – Manage packaging lines’ quality data and measurement control. Manage and optimize quality system and laboratory, ensure packaging lab’s equipment are calibrated and serviced as well as ensuring integrity of results through audits and Planned Job Observations. Ensure Packaging lab teams is trained and competent. Lead continuous improvement initiatives through identifying quality opportunities and technologists and the implementation thereof. Develop and review product standards and specifications and the training thereof. Develop packaging quality strategy and review performance against targets regularly to ensure continuous improvement, weekly and monthly reporting on performance. Ensure compliance to food safety training program, audit program, quality and food safety requirements, regulatory requirements as well as Health, safety and environment.
  • External Quality – Overlook package product through to warehouse, ensure product release follow first expiry first out (FEFO). Ensure non complying product is quarantined and follow inspection accordingly. Review and approve packaging’s concessions according to quality and food safety policies. Trend and investigate customer as well as consumer complaints and facilitate loop closure for identified root cause. Analyze product quality in trade to identify risks and mitigate impact.
  • Supplier Quality Management – Develop and review material receiving procedure, including applicable receiving inspections and record keeping of COA/COC. Ensure first in first out (FIFO) is followed for all packaging material to comply with traceability and food safety requirements. Lead supplier quality program and involved in supplier audits and parts of supplier quality assurance.
  • Supervisor – Manage and lead packaging lab team, ensuring their compliance to health, safety, quality and environmental requirements at all times. Instill discipline and performance reviews for team. Develop team competencies and engagement. Manage capex and running budget.

QA document Controller, SOUTH AFRICAN BREWERIES (Port Elizabeth)

Employed as Food Safety Team Leader, responsible for overseeing all aspects of quality management system based on ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System. This includes staying update with all standards and regulations applicable to the food industry, taking actions to ensure site wide compliance to quality requirements through training. Managing audit program as well as auditing systems and operations to ensure that the quality of finished product is compliant to internal and external standards as well as applicable regulations. 

Highlight: Never had major findings from the external audits (SABS) for FSSC 22000 and SANS 1841 eMark, DNV-GL audit for GFSI.

Duties:

  • Document Control – Developing, updating and amending policies, procedures as well and procedures related to quality. Controlling all documents using systematic numbering system as well as SAP system to avoid unauthorized changes. Manage and keep records from labs, product and process results. Conduct risk assessment for operations deviations and approve concession thereof. Review and update of process flow diagrams annually or when process changes happens. Involved in new product development, trials and projects.
  • Quality Management System – Compiling monthly QMS reports on the performance of the quality management system. Conduct and lead monthly quality and food safety meetings including management reviews with plant leadership where actions for improving the system and audit results are discussed, as well as reviewing of budget, training plan, supplier quality and all relevant updates and activities. Management Traceability system and lead mock recalls as well as leading Food safety risk assessments (HACCP, VACCP and TACCP) for site and ensure effective implementation through training and audits. Manage implementation of GMP, PRP and identified OPRP as per standard. Conduct departmental inspections and audits to identify opportunities for improvement and allocate findings to relevant head of departments. Management contracted service providers for pest control and cleaning.
  • Training – Oversee that all personnel involved in quality are trained accordingly to current versions of procedures and conduct planned job observations (PJO) to ensure compliance. Review system and structure for and conduct training for alignment. Develop training material for all changes in applicable standards and regulations.
  • Auditing – Develop and implement audit program for external audits, internal audits, inspections, PJO and applicable activities for all sections and departments in the plant. Conduct internal audits for applicable ISO Standard and regulations like e-Mark and compile audit report with findings, issue NCRs and ensure closure. Conducting Inspections, GMP audits and housekeeping spot check on raw materials and product. Participation in all external and 3rd party audit for the plant.

As Quality Assurance Technician I was responsible for monitoring and trending quality output from operations and overall governance including complaints handling.

Highlight: I was involved in new line expansion as QA Transition lead for the project.

Duties:

  • Daily review quality results from operations and escalating all deviations in accordance to quality system
  • Develop One Point Lessons to aid compliance to quality requirements
  • Verification and calibration of lab equipment
  • Monitor the integrity of the routine QC checks/tests and records done by operators 
  • Training of operators on quality procedures to ensure high integrity of results
  • Keeping training records for audit  purposes
  • Manage product quarantine process till release or destruction
  • Liaise with sales reps on customer and consumer complaints
  • Lead complaints’ investigations and problem solving at plant level
  • Involved in new product development and trials in the packaging lines
  • Liaise with customers and consumers on best resolutions for complaints

As Senior Lab Technician I was responsible for analyzing raw materials, in process samples as well as in finished good, raising deviation to process owners and ensuring correction of such. This involved equipment calibration and maintenance.

Duties:

  • Prepare samples using relevant apparatus and reagents
  • Conduct analysis using fundamental laboratory techniques and microbiology apparatus
  • Participate in troubleshooting and problem solving exercises on deviations and non-conformances
  • Identify equipment defects, establish root cause and take preventative and/or corrective action
  • Assist in identifying deviations on brewing and packaging processes through data and trends analysis
  • Maintain and Calibrate equipment (Including record keeping)
  • Communicating results, professional report and verbal
  • Compile and distribute machine status and deviation reports to relevant personnel 

Education

My highest qualification is BTech in Quality management which entails the implementation, management and improvement of a quality management system and the auditing thereof. I am currently working on obtaining Diploma in Packaging with the Institute for Brewing and Distillation (IBD UK) which entails the operation of a packaging environment and the manufacturing of packaging materials.
