Prof. Md. Shahidul Islam has completed his BSc (hons) and MSc degrees in Biochemistry with strong academic records. He has also completed his PhD in Nutritional Science from the Okayama University, Japan. Subsequently, he has completed two consecutive Postdoctoral Fellowships from the Seoul National University, South Korea and North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa, respectively. Subsequently, Prof. Islam also spent considerable amount of time as a “Visiting Research Fellow” at the Department of Biochemistry and Stem Cell Research, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, India and as a “Visiting Associate Professor” at St. Claraspital Hospital, Basel, Switzerland. Currently, he is serving as an “Full Professor of Biochemistry” and Academic Leader of Biotechnology Cluster (Westville Campus) under the School of Life Sciences; College of Agriculture, Engineering and Sciences of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. He achieved “Distinguished Teacher Award 2015” and “Top30 Researcher Award 2017, 2019 and 2021” from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. He also achieved a number of awards from International Endocrine Society, Korean Endocrine Society, Japan Diabetes Society, Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition, Pacific Science Association, International Diabetes Federation and many others in the previous years. Prof. Islam’s research focuses the development of novel non-genetic animal model of type 2 diabetes and obesity and investigating the antidiabetic and anti-obesogenic potentials and underlying mechanisms of various antidiabetic and anti-obesogenic drugs, medicinal and functional foods, sugar substitutes and artificial sweeteners, medicinal plant extracts, fractions and  their isolated pure compounds targeting novel drug discovery. Prof. Islam has been rated as an internationally recognized established researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF), South Africa. Currently, he is serving as a regular reviewer of more than 20 international peer reviewed journals and working as a Member of the Editorial Board or Associate Editor of 5 international journals and as one of the three “Editor-in-Chiefs” of the “World Journal of Diabetes”. Prof. Islam has been selected as one of the Global Top 2% researcher by Mandeley during 2019 and as one of the Global Top 0.016% researcher in the area of Experimental Diabetes Mellitus by Expert Escape during 2021. So far Prof. Islam published 14 peer reviewed book chapters, more than 200 research articles in the international peer reviewed journals including 11 reviews since 2004. He has successfully supervised the research projects of 3 Postdoctoral Fellows, 10 PhD, 11 MSc and 22 Honors level students and currently supervising the research projects of 5 PhD and 5 Masters and 2 honours levels students. His current h-index: 39, i10-index: 115 and total citation 5470 as per Google scholar.
