Luntukazi Tsobo

Hard working final year student in Medical Biosciences, at the University of Western Cape, who is doing part time voluntary work as a lab assistant in the institution. We are being rotated amongst all three disciplines under the Medical Biosciences department (anatomy, physiology and microbiology). My love for Science/health sciences started at a very young age to an extent that during my High School days, I did voluntary work at a local community surgery, where I was under the supervision of Doctors and nurses that worked there to guide me through the journey of dressing patients’ wounds,
 
cleaning the patients’ ears (removal of earwax) and more. My course and voluntary jobs did not only teach me/introduce me to this field but they taught me how to work in a team and individually, good communication skills, work under pressure and strive for perfection, even under ‘’abnormal’’ conditions to always have a positive mind-set.

Lab assistant (voluntary service) skills: Anatomy: Dissecting cadavers
Microbiology: making blood agar plate, chocolate agar and streaking them, using microscope to view organisms, sterilization using autoclave, lab setting and cleaning, using pipette to mix chemicals Physiology: withdrawing blood from patients, knowledge about heart, vein, kidney on professional level
