About Lungani Ntombela:

 I have been in the human resources management and industrial relations space for over 15 years. My current role as the Chief Human Resources Officer is at senior management level, having started working on the same role since 01 October 2018.
 

I currently hold national diploma in Human Resources Management from the Durban University of Technology and a Post-Graduate Diploma in the same field, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). I been accepted by UKZN to enrol for a Masters’ Degree in Industrial Relations for 2023, I also dedicated six years between 2015 until 2020, where I successfully pursued a Bachelor of Laws part-time with the Pietermaritzburg campus of the UKZN. My undergraduate degree deals with the law in its holistic form. I have successfully completed a challenging practical legal training (PLT) programme at the UKZN’s Howard College campus, between 24 May 2022 until 15 October 2022. Drafting of numerous legal documents, including various employment relations agreements, was at the centre of the PLT programme.
 

In my current role heading the human resources department for the KwaZulu-Natal Museum (Museum), I am responsible for identifying areas of opportunity within the Museum in as far as human capital is concerned, and further drive the implementation of the process to change and enhance the institution’s overall performance. Further to that, I am entrusted with overseeing all aspects of the Museum, including but not limited to; policy development and review, alignment of the HR polices to the overall Museum strategy, drawing up budget for the HRM unit, including salaries and training budget, and other related HR based liaison with other relevant departments. To name but a few key HR policies that I have championed development thereof, I can mention the Recognition of Improved Qualifications Policy which mainly seeks to empower employees of the Museum with further learning and linked to that policy is the memorandum of understanding between the Museum and UKZN, wherein fee remission is offered by the UKZN to Museum employees wishing to pursue post-graduate studies at the former. Another key policy is the Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) Policy, which has seen tremendous positive change in the individual employee performance, team performance and the overall performance of the Museum. Without effective leadership such projects will not see the light of day or would not be properly implemented to yield full benefit. The HR Department under my responsibility has managed consistent clean HR audits from the Auditor General, since my assumption of heading the department.

  Summary of main responsibilities:
Make arrangements and regulations for the administration of the FUND; Ensure that the fund employs proper control systems; Ensure that appropriate and adequate information is communicated to the members of the fund; Ensure that monthly contributions are paid promptly to the fund; Obtain expert advice on matters where Trustees lack sufficient expertise (e.g. Investments); Ensure that the rules, operation and administration of the fund comply with the relevant acts; Administrative duties. Trustees ensure that a registered and credible administrator is appointed to perform all administrative responsibilities on behalf of the fund; As part of the board of trustees we also: Ensure that new members join the fund in accordance with the fund’s eligibility conditions; Ensure collection, banking and investing of pension contributions; Arrange risk insurance (death and disability), pay premiums, submit and pay claims; Keep accounts and issue fund statements.

     Summary of main responsibilities:
Perform all the required duties as the secretary of the Employment Equity Committee; Ensure you take accurate and well represented meeting minutes during all Employment Equity Committee meetings; Consolidate report; Circulate meeting minutes a maximum of 48 hours after an Employment Equity Committee meeting on the correct template. Additional reports by the EE Committee members to be sent out to members within fourteen (14) days of the EE Committee meeting after sign off of the Senior Manager and EE Chairman: Benoni; Arrange the meeting venue, accommodation and relevant logistics for each EE Committee meeting; Send out the forum meeting agenda at least seven (7) working days before the EE Committee meeting; Circulate the annual schedule of EE Committee meetings to enable members to plan their time appropriately and get sign off by line managers in advance; Maintaining effective records and administration for the EE Committee; Ensuring that matters brought to the EE Committee are referred through to the appropriate channels; Collate all information from the EE boxes monthly at the Howick branch for the HR Director; EE Chairman and Group IR Manager; Make representations during Group meetings when required; Ensure that all EE Audits requested by Department of Labour for the Howick Plant are prepared for and executed effortlessly and with excellence by all involved; Assist the Chairman with implementation of the Employment Equity
