Justin Hedges

I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Stellenbosch and have written and passed CFA Levels 1 and 2 with level three to be completed in February of 2023. I have decided to start the journey toward CFA accreditation due to my ever-growing interest in the field of finance and related sectors. I believe that the methodology that an engineering background brings compliments the world of finance and as a result, I would be a strong asset to any organization.

Fivewest was a small Arbitrage start-up when I started, but it has grown from an initial size of five employees to over 30 in the space of 2 years. I began at the company as a developer/trading intern writing some simple code and helping with the trades. I was able to pick up the skills and quick thinking that came along with running the million-dollar-plus arbitrage book by the end of my first six months. During this time I was integral in developing the systems and processes that went into running an arbitrage book smoothly, teaching me valuable lessons in systems engineering and understanding different compliance procedures. I also managed the up-skilling of two interns at this point in time and was able to develop their skills so that I was able to move into a higher position to be able to just oversee the running of the arbitrage side of the business. 

The next role that I moved into was running the OTC desk for the South African side of the business. This involved a multitude of different aspects from client relations to quick problem-solving. Working in a space where there is a high degree of risk and millions on the line has taught me how to handle highpressure situations with a calm and analytical perspective, a skill that is integral for any person that is working in finance.

My most recent education was the CFA exam program. I have passed the first two papers first attempt and have written the final paper in Feb. This program gives me a good insight in to the world of finance and shows that I am able to gain a good grasp on information quickly.
