Engineering / Architecture
About Jesse-Daniel Box:
My name is Jesse-Daniel Box and I am a graduate of the UCT School of Architecture
Undergraduate Programme and have recently completed the Honours in
Landscape Architecture Programme. I attended Rondebosch Boys’ High School
where I studied Art, Physics and Engineering & Graphic Design (EGD). With these
interests, it was only natural for me to pursue a career in architecture. My other
passions include music composition and computational design.
Experience
In late June of 2018, I was fortunate enough to begin work as an intern at SLT
Architects in Century City. While working there I was tasked with three jobs which
include redrawing hand-drawn plans in CAD, data handling, 3D modeling and
rendering. By doing these tasks, I learnt to work more efficiently by using a variety
of applications, each according to the field they specialize in. With all these tasks
at hand, sticking to the assigned deadlines was crucial and was one of the many
fields I was proficient in. The two weeks I spent as an intern at SLT Architects
helped me get a better understanding of how things operate in the workplace
and got me into the rhythm of the nine-to-five lifestyle.
For many of us, the year 2020 was quite the curve ball, but through the struggle
we have come to learn to work independently and from the comfort of our homes.
I am privileged to be able to do this and have the necessary skills in applications
such as Zoom, Skype, Discord, Miro and the Google suite to be able to facilitate
any online work.
Working at Colab Concepts, I was tasked with designing a carpet layout using
three different shades of carpet tiles. Instead of laying out the tiles one by one
and arranging them into a specific design, I chose to make use of tools such as
Rhino 3D and Grasshopper to create multiple designs, all controlled by sliders,
which would control the amount of each colour of tile within a given boundary.
Through changing values in the code, one can manipulate the layout to achieve
your desired design. This is one of many ways that coding can support design and
create a more efficient workflow. I am currently looking into how one could use
Revit in tandem with Rhino 3D since the former excels in documentation and ease
of use while the latter is far better at parametric modelling in a freeform setting
Education
After working at Colab Concepts, I completed my honours in Landscape
Architecture degree. I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in Sustainable Urban Practice (MSUP).
