(CAPE TOWN OFFICE)

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation's health and

PROJECT COORDINATOR

6-MONTHS (Fixed term)**The SAMRC's Environment and Health Research Unit (E&HRU) requires a suitably qualified and experienced Project Coordinator. This position falls under the E&HRU Water, Sanitation and Society Programme with a focus on the SAMRC wastewater surveillance and research programme (WSARP). Applicants should be energetic, willing to travel, have a keen interest in environmental surveillance, suitable qualifications and research experience related to wastewater or water quality. The project coordinator will work closely with the project team to assist with the coordination and implementation of the multi-site wastewater surveillance project which includes collection of wastewater samples within the City of Cape Town and selected rural areas in the Western Cape.


Responsibilities:


  • Coordinate technical operation of projects according to study protocols.
  • Liaise with relevant provincial and district authorities, fieldworkers, facility managers, project manager and PI to plan data collection.
  • Transport collected wastewater samples to designated laboratories.
  • Manage/supervise fieldworker's performance at one site across more than one study project including staff training.
  • Organization and management of data, including data entry and record keeping.
  • Monitor progress of research activities and generate regular and adhoc reports as required using excel and/or statistical analysis tools.
  • Communicate the research outputs.
  • Plan, coordinate and manage all logistics and operational aspects of the project and field sites.
  • Laboratory storage management of wastewater samples.
  • Laboratory extraction of RNA from wastewater samples.

Core Requirements**:


  • A completed 4 year Tertiary Hons degree in Environmental Science or related Science qualification.
  • At least 2years' recent experience in the research environment focusing on wastewater or water quality.
  • At least 1year recent experience with collection of environmental samples.
  • Experience in using statistical analysis packages.
  • Experience in writing project reports.
  • Code 08 Manual Driver license.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Completed MSc degree.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques (Good Laboratory Practices).
  • Knowledge and experience with RNA extraction.

Advantageous:

A salary in the region of R per month, cost-to-company will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
