Job Advert Summary:

RAINBOW is on the hunt to recruit Shift Controllers within the Engineering department.

The positions include managing electrical and mechanical aspects and team and ensuring proactive maintenance, repair and all electrical breakdowns and checks are done competently including servicing of equipment.


Minimum Requirements:

Grade 12 or equivalent.

Relevant trade test

Qualified Artisan with a minimum of N5 in Electrical or Mechanical engineering

Have 5 years relevant experience in electrical and or mechanical field.

FMCG experience advantageous.

Must be willing to work shifts, standby, weekends and overtime.

Ability to lead a diverse and multi-disciplinary team effectively

As a Shift Controller, the job holder is expected to:
Make operational and technical decisions that fall within the ambit of responsibility.

Troubleshoot, fault find and maintain mechanical & electrical equipment that falls within scope of practice.

Spend 80% of his/her time working on the floor.

Diagnose any running problems quickly and accurately, and take appropriate action to rectify the problem


Duties and Responsibilities:


Operational Maintenance:

Utilise the skill matrix to assess the applicability of assignments based on individual skill sets.

Plan and manage all planned maintenance, preventative schedules, work requests and break downs.


Determine material, equipment, and supplies to be used and ensure that these are ordered and available at the work site.

Help plan and manage weekend mechanical maintenance tasks and projects.


Use planned maintenance schedules to coordinate daily activities of engineering employees and implement operational asset productivity and care through the planned maintenance strategy by noting and driving the resolution of maintenance issues.

Monitor, measure and report on engineering related down-time and general issues.

Fault find on plant equipment or machinery to ascertain and repair faults to ensure production can continue.

Attend to and resource plant breakdowns timeously in order to minimise production downtime.

Conduct planned maintenance as per the job card schedule and sign off job once fully completed.


Budgeting and Administration:

Manage the maintenance spend against budget through daily review of budget vs. actual financial reports.


Provide input to the Plant Engineer to cocreate and commit to an appropriate engineering budget during the annual budgeting process.

Authorise stores requisitions and provide initial sign off of invoices prior to submission to Plant Engineer.

Work with the Plant Engineer and Planner to ensure accurate reporting.


Coordinate and sign off on the team's submission of all required documentation to the Engineering Planner for inclusion in engineering information systems (On-key).

Organise meetings with engineering staff, prepare inspection reports and action the non-conformances.


Ensure that all maintenance certificates of compliance are appropriately issued and action taken according to the scheduled plan and task lists are recorded by the planner.


Project Management:


Provide input to the Plant and Project Engineer on the feasibility of projects by analysing technology, resource needs and market demands to assure project feasibility.


Work with the Project Engineer to ensure that the requirements of internal customers are met and to prepare accurate project specifications.


SHEQ Implementation:

Ensure employees follow safety rules and regulations as per the Business's safety plan.

Ensure plant safety equipment is in good working order (e.g. fire extinguishers) at all times.


Guide the team to ensure that all legislative standards are achieved and timeous action is taken where required to ensure that there are no areas of noncompliance.

Measure and manage sustainability practices within the plant area.

Maintain and implement food safety standards.


Team Supervision:

Supervise the engineering personnel with regards to HR and IR issues.

Manage the day to day activities and outputs of the engineering team

Train and mentor the team to improve performance and reduce down time.


Utilise skills matrix to assess capability gaps within the shift and develop a training plan in conjunction with the HR development specialist to address skills gaps.


Be available on call out and work on weekends or when necessary to ensure optimal performance of the team and effective maintenance of equipment.

Organise daily meetings with engineering staff and prepare inspection reports.

Manage engineering staff and facilitate their attainment of KPI's and institute corrective action if necessary.

Plan and manage the leave roster and register.

Perform work inspections and checks for completeness of tasks and compliance with legislation, SHEQ and in-house maintenance standards.

Assist to smoothly implement projects on time and within the agreed budget.
