Job Advert Summary:


Purpose of the position:


The Social Auxiliary Worker (SAW) in the PWID programme will primarily be responsible for conducting individual assessments and providing therapeutic interventions for people who use or inject drugs (PWID).

The SAW will place a special emphasis on the PWID currently on Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) as part of social re-integration, as well as to women who use or inject drugs reached in the programme.


Minimum Requirements:


  • Social auxiliary worker qualification
  • Two years related training
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a social auxiliary worker
  • Experience in social auxiliary work
  • Experience in working in HIV programmes with key populations. Experience in harm reduction and PWID programming is beneficial
  • Experience in providing therapeutic interventions to address substance abuse and harm reduction
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP)
  • Computer literate in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in English and isiXhosa/Afrikaans languages
  • Valid code 8 driver's licence

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • To provide safe and confidential psychosocial or crisis interventions for PWID in the programme
  • With a special focus on OST clients, support PWID on OST with social reintegration and family reunification
  • To follow up on each client, checking adherence to ART, TB treatment or PEP
  • Support referral for any services the PWID required
  • Compile reports on client trends, needs, challenges and actions
  • Perform related office administration duties of the programme
