Job Purpose


The Head of Media & Digital Relations ensures the strategic, planning, development, implementation and monitoring of audience engagement programmes to achieve MSF Southern Africa's organisational objectives.

The role is responsible for managing news media engagement, integrated digital strategy and specialist audience engagement to enable resource (Fundraising & HR) and influence (Advocacy) mobilisation objectives within the overall Section communication strategy.


Reporting Structure


The Head of digital and media relations reports to the Director of Communication and is part of the Communication Department's Coordination & Challenge Team (CCT).

The CCT consists of 3 Communication Managers - responsible for Content production and Positioning (Input Team), Regional Operational Communication and Audience Outreach.

The position contributes to long-term strategy definition and results with the 3 year strategic cycle by defining an integrated engagement strategy and activities.

The role collaborates strategically with Fundraising and HR departments through their sub team managers to define and coordinate digital marketing and offline events as part of a coherent and comprehensive audience engagement strategy and action plans.


Accountabilities (OUTPUTS AND KEY ACTIONS)

Ensure Integrated Outreach Strategy Development, Planning, Implementation and Monitoring:

  • Define and develop a 3-year integrated audience engagement strategy with differentiated actions for news media and digital teams, as well as medical audiences to support goals for influence and resource mobilization.
  • Approves team strategies, defines outputs and key indicators for digital, news media and medical audience reach and engagement, ensuring quarterly reviews linked to benchmarks to assess and improve performance:
  • Oversee, review and monitor the engagement strategy of the Comms Dept. Outreach digital team (Digital Specialist and Social Media Officer) and their integrated collaborations with Fundraising Digital Marketing Manager and Digital Marketing Specialist to ensure quality outputs and impact based on the agreed optimization benchmarks. This includes developing targets and monitoring performance regularly in consultation with the Fundraising Acquisitions & Marketing Manager.
  • Oversee, review and monitor the engagement strategy of the news media team targeting priority news outlets in South Africa and the region, to ensure quality outputs and impact based on benchmarks. This includes developing targets and monitoring performance regularly.
  • Oversee, review and monitor the Outreach team's medical audience engagement programme which includes medical journal editorial and advertising actions as well as online and offline events to support targeted recruitment objective serving the Human Resources department. This includes developing targets and monitoring performance regularly.
  • Define and develop an annual integrated strategic plan for MSF SnA which addresses Communication, Advocacy, Fundraising and Human Resources objectives for public engagement that ensures efficiency in resource allocation and positive impact via collaboration with these departments. The resulting strategy and annual action plan will address overarching/transversal audience engagement objectives as well as specific needsbased support actions to these departments. The head of digital and media relations, will manage the process to create the strategic plan and present it for endorsement to department directors, and will ensure regular moments for review and adaptation based on measurable indicators.
  • Holds accountability for quality control on MSF SnA's overall digital and online presence based on industry best practice across digital platforms and owned media + newsletters + digital campaigns).
  • Determines datadriven decisions toward optimized digital outputs for the Communication and Fundraising departments in consultation with the Fundraising Digital Marketing Manager and ensures the Outreach team Digital Specialist maintains:
  • Regular reports on insights, lessons learned and adaptation of strategy.
  • Collects insights, monitors impacts and quality of Outreach team actions to inform the Positioning/Co
