Job Advert Summary:


The Africa Institute of South Africa in the HSRC wishes to appoint a suitable PhD Trainee in the area of International Relations and Political Sciences.

AISA leads and coordinates the HSRC's research and strategic engagements in Africa in pursuit of HSRC & Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) Africa focus mandate.

It, therefore, acts as a catalyst for research, capacity development and implementation support across the continent. AISA also undertakes basic, applied policy-relevant and comparative research.

The Institute also seeks to build capacity and provide policy advice and implementation support to advance the HSRC's own Africa Research Partnership and Collaboration Strategy as well as South Africa's African Agenda, DSI's Africa Strategy, SADC's Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan RISDP), the African Union's Agenda 2063, and the key frameworks of the United Nations (SDG's, UNSCR It collaborates with a range of national, continental, and international governments, as well as multilateral institutions, research institutes, universities, and civil society organisations in order to achieve its objectives.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications of similar e.g., marketing, journalism, public relations
  • Proven experience and talent in creative communication strategies and social media (B2C PR/Comms agency, corporate communications experience preferable)
  • A sound understanding of local media, African Affairs content relevant to research and development, creator market and trends
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and positive about working in a fastpaced environment;
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to coordinate and capacitate staff;
  • Demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other accounting tools.
  • Must have intellectual and personal integrity, with a welldeveloped work ethic and drive, and an aptitude for innovation;
  • Should be able to work under pressure, and after hours when required to meet deadlines;
  • Must be able to work proactively and independently;

Duties and Responsibilities:


Responsibilities:


  • Understand the HSRC's strategy, communications and engagement policies, and support regional implementation plan of 4 special projects in AISA
  • Develop the communication tools and plans for the said projects, plan for potential challenges,
  • Develop and execute communications messaging to critical government stakeholders,
  • Work with teams across the organisation including operations, researchers, partnerships, the executive responsible to provide strategic guidance and local insights
  • Support in preparation for media interviews, presentations, and other speaking engagements,
  • Plan, build and maintain relationships with media and influencers across different beats (dedicated to African Affairs) that will help us serve our mission and vision
