  • Our client has an opening for a General Counsel, you will be responsible for advising and directing stakeholders in the assigned business area and/or category with respect to the implementation, execution and monitoring of relevant and appropriate policy, regulatory and compliance frameworks on a daytoday basis and effectively and efficiently support transactional legal needs. You will drive the development of a strong compliance and governance culture in the company and enable the business through valueadding partnering

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in strategy sessions of the Business Unit and assesses legal and regulatory risks in day to day interaction to ensure that all significant legal transactions of an operational and strategic nature are effectively addressed and implemented and advise management of their responsibilities in relation to legal compliance legislation which impact existing and envisaged future business operations from a compliance perspective
  • Drafts and reviews contracts, and provide legal advice and opinions and proactive recommendations
  • Keeps abreast of legal developments through external engagement and continuing legal education
  • Evaluates proposed, new and amended legislation and interprets its impact on business operations in a timely manner once published and contributes to the establishment and further development of a Regulatory Compliance & Ethics programme
  • Identifies potential areas of legal risk and vulnerability and develops, implements and monitors corrective action and controls
  • Reports to the Executive Committee and Board committees on all relevant and material aspects of regulation, compliance and governance risks, as required
  • Contributes to the further adoption and implementation of legal technology as an enabler and actively contributes to legal team internal knowledge management (knowledge sharing through updates sessions, systematic storage of templates and precedents, etc.)
  • Sets legal resourcing strategy (Make or Buy), within the prescripts of the delegation of authority framework and conducts make or buy scenarios to substantiate external counsel involvement and conducts external counsel selection processes and provides regular performance feedback (e.g. hours per matter) and oneonone discussions with the team to identify opportunities for efficiency and effectivity gains by process change, technology enablement or additional training.

Experience Required
years' post qualification experience in a law firm or an in-house legal department (preferably in the consumer packaged goods or FMCG sector, of which 5 have been in a Senior legal position)

  • Strong corporate commercial law, marketing and advertising law and dispute resolution
  • Good understanding of regulatory and consumer protection laws and other pertinent areas of law relevant to food and beverage business

Qualification

  • B Com / Bachelor's Degree and LLB
  • Admitted Attorney or Advocate
