Purpose:


  • To execute health and safety environmental related tasks to ensure compliance to health and safety legislation in general and specific organization and clients standards. Safety officers are responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing company's employee safety at work. Their main duty is to ensure that the company is complying and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines_

Reporting to:
_SHE Manager/Project Manager_


Qualifications/ Experience:

- _National Diploma in Safety Management equivalent, COMSOC 1,2,3, SAMTRAC_
- _Registered as Construction Health and Safety Officer with SACPCMP, CHSO and current CPD status_
- _Computer literacy skills e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint._
- _Risk Assessment_
- _Incident and accident Investigation_
- _NEMA trained_
- _3-6 years' experience in the engineering and construction industry_
- _Extensive experience as a safety officer within Construction and/or Power Stations_
- _Knowledge and understanding of OHS Act and other legislation that have an impact on safety activities particularly engineering, design and construction activities._
- _Knowledge of the ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001_
- _- 6 years of experience working on a construction project, managing environmental compliance,_
- _Environmental law training (Legal Liability, Construction Regulations 2014)_
- _ISO 14001 development, implementation, and auditing certificate_
- _Interpretation and Implementation of SA environmental legislation and regulations_
- _Knowledge and understanding of environmental impacts and aspects associated with construction projects_
- _Environmental incident reporting investigation_
- _Knowledge of environmental authorization_
- _Medically fit_
- _Good communication and mediation skills_
- _Problem solving_
- _Driver's license and own transport_


Minimum Requirements:

- _National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent_
- _- 6 years' experience in the engineering and construction industry in multi-disciplinary engineering, construction, and procurement projects in power & utility, renewable energy projects, etc.
  • Registered as Construction Health and Safety Officer with SACPCMP_
- _Health and safety auditing skills (Lead or internal)_
- _Incident investigation and root cause analysis_
- _Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Training_
- _Extensive knowledge and understanding of all legislation having an impact on health, safety and environment activities particularly multi
- disciplinary engineering and design and construction activities._
- _Incident and accident reporting and investigation_
- _Report writing and statistical presentation._
- _Fall protection plan training, developing_


Responsibilities:

- _Implement and/or monitor the implementation of health and safety policies, programs, plans and procedures_
- _Assist the project and SHE manager in complying with current health and safety legislation and/or regulations with the objective of ensuring that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect the safety and health of staff client, visitors and contractors_
- _Provide health and safety technical input into the project_
- _Planning and reviewing of health and safety project requirements and maintaining project health and safety schedules and plans._
- _Be able to understand and speak Afrikaans._
- _Planning and execution of project audits, inspections and implementing corrective actions._
- _Prepare, organize and maintain inspection data, reports and systems to control project SHE plans_
- _Develop and implement health and safety awareness at all levels within the organization and projects_
- _Report and investigate all applicable incidents/ accidents_
- _Investigate and report complaints of hazardous working conditions to the project or line manager and/or other appropriate senior management_
- _Conduct project and facility health and safety inspections_
- _Arrange for occupational health and safety testing and/or evaluations of the workplace by external agencies/consultants as may be necessary_
- _Attend Occupational Health & Safety Committees meetings_
- _Liaise with all related governmental bodies and regulating agencies_
- _Coordinate the training of personnel in areas of HSE, including accident prevention and investigation, workplace inspections and other matters related to implementing HSE procedures_
- _Continual promotion of the health and safety ethos and culture at all levels in the Company and with subcontractors._
- _Develop, review and update appropriate sections of the projects/company Emergency Procedures and Plans._
- _Compile safety statistics / month reports / review reports_
- _Generate pro-active plans / actions to reduce incidents or construction delays_
- _Assume other duties that may be assigned._
