Position Summary:


We are looking for a dynamic, innovative and hardworking Estate Manager who has strong leadership abilities, as well as excellent planning and communication skills.


The purpose of a Estate Manager job is multifaceted and includes overseeing all aspects of farm operations to ensure efficient and successful production and the successful operations of all estate facilities.

This role reports directly to the owner of the farm.


Important to this role will be taking an active role in facilitating and planning the future developments across the estate.


Responsibilities:


  • The management of farm workers and maintenance team;
  • Assist with the planning of future development which includes but not limited to;
  • Handling water and power infrastructure;
  • Liasing with contractors and project managers;
  • Recordkeeping of chemical spraying and stock taking;
  • Recordkeeping of irrigation;
  • General maintenance of equipment and farm implements;
  • Ensuring all vineyard practices are undertaken timeously with a high degree of accuracy;
  • Vineyard health monitoring across all vineyards;
  • Working with our wine makers to develop spray programs and manage execution of programs;
  • Ensuring maintenance of farming infrastructure and equipment, including tractors, implements, water infrastructure, buildings etc;
  • Helping to truck grapes in harvest time.

Operational management - Manipulation of vineyards

Full management of vineyard, including:

  • Full estate management of entire estate
  • Pruning of Vines
  • Harvest Control
  • Harvesting of grapes

Crop protection and crop promotion

  • Fungicide and insecticide sprays
  • Any other related crop protection sprays that may be used in the production of grapes

Fertilization and Soil amendments

  • Taking soil and leaf samples at given times
  • Any soil corrections for mature as well as new vines
  • Fertilization of saplings

Planting of new vineyards

  • Ground preparation related tasks
  • Liaison with soil experts and laboratories
  • Taking soil samples
  • Supervision of land preparation machines

Erection of Gazebo System

  • Measuring block
  • Planting of poles
  • Construction of arbour system

Water management

  • Irrigation
  • Draining of wet spots

Financial Management

  • Budgeting and financial planning for the farm
  • Ensure that all resources are allocated effectively
  • Monitor expenses

General management functions

  • General staff management and motivation
  • Address escalated people related issues and progressive disciplinary matters
  • Control and management of vehicles
  • Understanding and keeping track of relevant audit

Requirements:

Grade 12 certificate;
A diploma in Agriculture;
Minimum 3-5 years winegrapes and crop farming experience;
Code 10 and 14 driver's license;
Good interpersonal, recordkeeping and administrative skills;
Strong mechanical skills;
Attention to detail;
Vineyard management experience is a must;
Must be able to draw up a farm's budget and managed the budget;
Computer programs (MS Office);
Knowledge of quality control measure, compliance and wine industry regulations.


Other knowledge and skills required:


  • Good planning ability (short, medium, and long term);
  • Knowledge of all audits;
  • Must be able to manage costs effectively;
  • Knowledge of cultivating plants to produce fruit to the required standards;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • A work ethic that prizes accuracy, thoroughness, drive, and integrity;
  • Demonstratable management and leadership qualities;
  • Must be physically fit to perform the work;
  • Valid Driver's licence;
  • Able to speak, read and write in English or Afrikaans. (Ability to speak Xhosa or Sotho will count in your favour);
  • Strong numerical skills;
  • Strong organisation and planning skills in meeting deadlines;
  • An action orientated approach with an intense sense of accountability;
  • Able to work under pressure;
  • Selfdisciplined, collaborator;
  • Hard worker with a strong sense of accountability & resilience;
  • Great sense of showing initiative;
  • Display strategic vision to improve operations.
