IIE MSA, formerly known as Monash South Africa, was founded in 2001 by Monash University. Since April 2019 we are part of The Independent Institution of Education (The IIE), a leader in the higher education sphere. The IIE is internationally recognised by the British Accreditation Council. IIE MSA, located on a 100-hectare campus in Ruimsig, Johannesburg, in the province of Gauteng. In addition to domestic (South African) students, IIE MSA is home to a diverse of cultures of students from 50 African countries.


The IIE MSA Ruimsig campus in Roodepoort has a vacancy for a Laboratory Technician.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Laboratory technical support

  • Preparation of laboratories for practicum classes, including preparing all equipment and consumables.
  • In collaboration with the lecturer provide guidance and support to students during classes, and packing away and cleaning all equipment after classes.
  • Oversee all Engineering Facilities and the installation of new equipment/services in the laboratories
  • Assist academic staff with various research projects that require the use of any of these laboratories.
  • Prepare and maintain inventories of laboratory equipment and consumables.
  • Overseeing the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) evidence collection process, which includes the copying, scanning and downloading of assessments and meticulous filing thereof (including the capturing of results), both digitally and in hard copy, as well as liaising with lecturers and students to have original scripts returned to students

Oversee Health and safety and training

  • Training students on the use of equipment and consumables during practicum classes and for their research and design projects.
  • Recordkeeping of all Health and Safety aspects including training.
  • Facilitate regulatory health and safety inspections of all laboratories and ensure that all regulatory requirements are met at all times.
  • Develop and update a health and safety manual with relevant Standard Operating Procedure and Safety (SOPS).
  • Develop a maintenance plan for the laboratories and ensuring the upkeep of all apparatus and facilities.
  • Conduct and/or schedule calibration, maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment
  • Provide health and safety training to all staff and students using the laboratories and ensuring that all occupational health and safety protocols meet the standard requirements.

Procurement

  • Liaising with suppliers to manage the procurement of apparatus and consumables, to coordinate deliveries and to facilitate the commissioning of equipment.
  • Communicates with Procurement and Finance Departments to arrange all logistics for students and staff (including the Engineering Student Societies) to visit various locations.
  • Prepare and submit reports to the IIE MSA Finance Department and record all documentation to ensure that careful accounting is maintained

Minimum Education Requirements:


  • 3 year Diploma or equivalent within engineering or physical science

Ideal

  • Bachelor of Technology or equivalent within Engineering or Science and
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (Engineering laboratories)

Minimum Work Experience Requirements:


  • Minimum of 2 years Laboratory management experience and 2 years of Experience in Health and Safety of laboratories

Special Requirement:


  • Driver's License advantageous
