Applications are invited for the above-indicated vacancy within Newzroom Afrika. The incumbent will report to the executive - governance, compliance, risk and legal (GCRL).


Job purpose:

The legal advisor is the direct and central support for the executive: GCRL on all legal matters. The role is responsible for providing legal and regulatory compliance services to the organisation.


Key responsibilities:

Legal

Provide legal advice and support to the management team and business units in mitigating legal related risks.
Manage litigation and dispute resolution matters for the organisation.

Drafting and review of contracts, including standard service level agreements and/or vet non-standard contracts and ensure that the contract terms are reasonable and that the company's interests are duly protected.

Managing the contract management system. Implement the organisations regulatory compliance risk management programme.
Maintenance of a compliance universe that includes all the compliance obligations the organisation is required to meet.
Develop and implement measures to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and rules applicable to organisation.
Ensuring all the essential guidelines are put in place to ensure adherence to rules and regulations.

Review and analyse current and future legislation, regulations and rules to determine and confirm the areas of compliance and non-compliance.

Effective communication of compliance risks and obligations to relevant stakeholders.
Development and maintenance of compliance risk management plans for prioritised compliance obligations in conjunction with business stakeholders.
Recommending improvements to operational procedures to aid improved compliance.
Implement a compliance complaint handling mechanism for the organisation.
Carry out compliance monitoring activities in accordance with a risk-based compliance monitoring programme.
Develop and maintain effective compliance reporting procedures and processes for the organisation.

Develop and oversee the implementation of appropriate record keeping policies, procedures, processes and practices for compliance with record keeping obligations.

Guide and facilitate the development of a training programme on compliance matters affecting the organisation.
Create and implement a compliance awareness campaign.

Advise, assist and guide internal stakeholders to ensure a compliance culture is embedded across the organisation and in so doing empowering the company to manage regulatory.


Minimum requirements and qualifications:

LLB or higher degree.
Admitted to practice as attorney in South Africa.
Affiliation with Compliance Institute of Southern Africa, advantageous.
Minimum of five years of post-articles experience in a similar role.
Sound knowledge of South African law.
Previous experience with a law firm.
Prior experience in the television and broadcasting industry will be advantageous.
Proven experience as a risk and compliance Officer.
