Our opportunity:
GIS Analyst


The incumbent will, as a member of the pricing team, be responsible for provision of GIS support to Bryte Broker Distribution and Bryte Specialist Insurance divisions.

The individual will provide decision makers in business with analyses and reporting solutions, enabling effective decision taking and coordination of actions by management.


Problem statements include:

  • Address validation and geocoding
  • Risk Prescreening, with the intention to identify accumulation and clashing of cover, as well as proximity and exposure to water, weather, seismic and fire (natural) hazards.
  • General geospatial visualization and analysis, including developing, sourcing, and maintaining appropriate risk maps covering risk proxies like crime, census data, hail & lightning density, geological, topography and points of interest.
Key Tasks & Accountabilities

  • Monitoring prescreening of risks at quoting stage in the centre of excellence. Identifying training needs, solution enhancement and improving process efficiencies and accuracy.
  • GIS tasks relating to data extraction, collection, cleaning, and preparation for analyses. General tracking and reporting on quality of address data quality and success rates at attaching geocodes.
  • Post Catastrophe Reporting, be it quick flash reports after smaller events or contributing to reporting after large events. Participation in business review groups coordinating Bryte response to events.
  • Coordination and specifying book analyses for exposure to risks. Includes specification of analysis in consultation with various internal business units. Extracting and preparation of data to specification. Completing analysis and reporting back to business.
  • Vendor research, engagement and coordination for software, external data enrichment and analytics will be needed from time to time. These include participation in procurement processes.
  • Research and reporting on perils and risks of geospatial nature. Drafting reports and presenting results to appropriate business forums.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Matric
  • Tertiary qualification (B.Sc. Informatics, geoscience, or similar degree)
  • GIS data capture, data preparation and analytics
  • Data extensive extraction and querying experience
  • Dashboard building and other data visualisation experience
  • Performing data munging and cleaning to convert data into analytics ready form, Geospatial visualisation, and analytics experience
  • Knowledge of disaster risk (floods, fire etc)
  • Understanding of insurance(advantageous)
  • Research and report writing
Beneficial

  • Base SAS Certification in addition to Programming 1, Programming 2 & Macros
  • QGIS and/or Spatial Key experience
  • Python and R languages experience advantageous
Experience

Minimum

  • At least 4 years' experience in geospatial visualisation and analytics
  • Data ETL experience and scheduling advantageous
  • Geospatial analytics data munging, visualisation and analyticsessential
  • Proficient in SQL / SAS, QGIS / Spatial Key
  • Experience in R, Python and Qlik
