The main purpose of this position is to provide team leadership in producing high-quality research that supports the South African Reserve Bank's (SARB) financial stability mandate and informs macroprudential policymaking.

Detailed Description

Lead research projects in close collaboration with relevant SARB sectoral specialists, external academic research fellows and other financial institutions and regulators on topics of relevance to domestic financial stability.


  • Identify emerging international and domestic issues and topics that may negatively impact financial stability in South Africa, and conduct research on potential macroprudential tools to address such risks.
  • Prepare briefings and presentations on financial stability to the senior management of the SARB, the Financial Stability Committee, and statutory committees as well as external stakeholders, the media and other public forums.
  • Present the results of research conducted to senior stakeholders, both within and external to the SARB.
  • Perform ongoing research to benchmark the SARB's approach to monitoring domestic financial stability and propose refinements to the SARB's methodological approach to ensure the SARB framework for monitoring domestic financial stability remains relevant and fit for purpose.
  • Draft relevant, highquality contributions for inclusion in the SARB's biannual _Financial Stability Review _publication.
  • Respond to questionnaires, surveys and other ad hoc requests from internal stakeholders, international standardsetting bodies, and other stakeholders to inform and support the SARB policy positions communicated at local and international forums.
  • Draft highquality briefing and speaking notes for senior management to ensure appropriate and consistent policy positions are communicated at relevant domestic and international forums.
  • Build and maintain key stakeholder relationships both within and outside of the SARB.
  • Perform projectbased performance appraisals for team members and provide input into the overall performance evaluation process.
  • Ensure that the methodologies applied comply with best practice as well as local and international standards, and recommend improvements to methodologies in own area of specialisation.
  • Compile and/or provide input into strategic and operational plans as well as the divisional budget and management information reports.
Job Requirements
a minimum of a Master's degree in Finance, Economics, Accountancy or a related field, or an equivalent qualification; and
- at least eight years of job-related experience.

The following would be an added advantage:

  • PhD or registration for a PhD;
- a track record of published research;
- working effectively in a small and specialised team;
- working in an unstructured environment that requires flexibility and adaptability; and/or
- working independently without constant supervision.


Additional requirements include:
- sound knowledge of the financial system and its interconnections, and how these may negatively impact domestic financial stability;
- an understanding of financial products, services and markets that impact on financial stability;
- basic knowledge of macroprudential tools;
- excellent analytical skills;
- proven facilitation and presentation skills;
- excellent interpersonal skills;
- excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
- proficiency in the use of Microsoft (MS) Office products such as MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

**The SARB offers remuneration and benefits commensurate with the level of the position and in line with the market. The level at which the successful applicant will be appointed will depend on his/her experience and competence.
